Who are we, but ourselves.
What are we, but each other.

People Watching

“Look!” I point at the screen,
silver flashes of fish,
parabolic curves of dolphins surging
out the surface
of the water. The eternal dance,
predator and prey,
daily life set to the rhythm of waves.

He looks,
watches the puffin waddle across
tumultuous cliffs, witnesses the whale
shark open its gaping mouth.

“The World is so big!”
He exclaims,
and I notice the wide expanse
of sea, the home within
which the eels make their house.
Did the fish ever notice
the sea that embraced them just
as much as she let them
go? I look with him
at the sea salt spray thrown
up against the rock face. I close
my eyes, feel the faint
stirrings of air.
And indeed-

There is space
for us all
yet.

Note: This poem will be read aloud and featured on ‘One Poem Only’, a podcast that reads a poem a day. Do give Maggie a listen, the way she enunciates words and leaves space for silence has me leaning into the sound of her voice. She’s simply magical, and I’m beyond excited that she chose my poem to read.

The poem will air this Thursday, after the airing of which I will add the link here.
